Week 8:Methods of Practice – School-Based Interventions. Beginning at age 4 or 5, children spend most of their waking hours at school. Most states include social workers in the school setting and even require specialized training for school social workers.

This week, you examine school-based interventions. You also discover that working in a school, even if only as a contract social worker, will require skill in dealing effectively with multiple professions and perspectives.

Students will:

• Analyze the school-home-community partnerships
• Analyze inter-professional collaboration challenges in a host setting
• Identify specific social work roles in school-home-community partnerships

Discussion: Working in a Host Setting

Although some schools employ their own social worker, it is not uncommon for schools to contract with community resources for social work services. That often means a social worker spends only part of their workday or workweek in a particular school. More often than not, they are the only social worker at that location.

In this Discussion, you describe the challenges that a social worker may face when providing services in a non-social-work setting and suggest ways to maintain a social work identity while in that environment.

Assignment: Paper School-Based Social Work – A Case Analysis

School social work is not always practiced in the school building. In fact, school social workers often work with a child at home and involve a variety of community resources to support the child and family.

In this Assignment, consider the work done by the school social worker with the Rodao family. How would you prepare the family for continued success once your role is complete?

Review the Case of the Rodao family from this week’s Learning Resources.

• Briefly summarize the case.
• Identify the specific social work roles demonstrated by the social worker.
• Identify at least two additional community professionals you would invite to support the Rodao family once the social work services have terminated and what you hope they could offer.
