One of the most pervasive patterns in literature and in life is the Oedipal pattern, so called for the pattern in the depicted life of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King in the play of that name. During class this semester, we have discussed this pattern as it manifests itself in several-indeed, the majority-of the works that students were assigned to read, the specific works being the Cain and Abel episodes from the Old Testament. In a well-organized essay, explain how this Oedipal Pattern can logically be seen to manifest itself through the plot and principals of above listed work. Include in your explanation an observation how each of the works that you select contribute some new wrinkle or revision to an understanding Sigmund Freud’s notion of the Oedipus Complex.
